We have entered a new era, in which digital technology is replacing many long practiced traditions. The increasing ubiquity of satellite internet is converting many components of our daily lives into business to be conducted on the computer. It is strange when you think about it, that so many things now exist in digital form within cyberspace, essentially intangible and unreachable without an Internet connection. These digital processes and images are seemingly magical and cannot be physically touched. They thus cease to exist in the world of concrete objects and now belong to the domain of the cyber age.

One such example is photography, an art form that is rapidly being changed by digital technology. Although it has roots several centuries in the past, photography as a usable process dates back to the nineteenth century. In its early days, it was a nearly incomprehensible invention that froze a moment in the past, encapsulating it on paper and allowing it to endure long into the future. Imagine the surprise one must have experienced at the first encounter with a photograph; a picture that was not drawn or painted but a rendition of the world as a real as looking out the window.

Photography continued to develop over the past two hundred years, beginning as a more primitive process that had more limited capabilities, then giving way to Color Photography and finally digital photography. The art of capturing an image in time, knowing how to manipulate the impressions made by light and shadow, intuition of various angles and perspective, became an expressive form that held the capacity to evoke an emotional response from the audience. It is a powerful medium, as our visual senses are perhaps the most complex and relied upon process in navigating through the world. Photography is a manipulation of those visual senses that links them to a point in history, making the photograph a beautiful and precious commodity.

Photographs are obviously still of extreme importance to us in many ways. As they say, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” The medium has been changed, however. With each passing year, the framed photograph that one can actually touch with their hands is becoming increasingly less common. The vast array of exchange that takes place using satellite internet broadband is largely composed of images. These images are primarily digital and many of them only exist on the Internet. Printing photographs seems much less necessary than it used to be, as the exchange of images and photographs is easier and more efficient with the use of the Internet. One can share the hundreds of pictures they have taken in online albums, with their friends who live hundreds or thousands of miles away. This convenience has its obvious benefits, allowing almost anyone to gain access to their loved ones shared pictures, painting a picture of their life that may be otherwise unreachable. But there is something to be said for the tradition of photography that has always implied a finished product, a tangible photo that has undergone the exposure process and a living symbol of the past.
